Refrigeration metering devices
Every refrigeration unit, system or plant requires a precise flow of liquid refrigerant to keep the refrigeration system functioning properly. Before the 1970’s, most systems used what were known as thermostatic or thermal expansion valves (TEV’s or TXV’s).
In simple terms TEV’s perform their role in controlling the refrigerant fluid entering the evaporator by means of a pressure sensor and a temperature sensor. Thermal expansion valves are often referred to generically as “metering devices”.
Electronic expansion valves
Electronic expansion valves, were introduced post 1970’s. EEV’s are modern high performance metering devices. Alike their predecessors, EEV’s regulate the flow of gases or liquids in a variety of HVAC/R applications.
EEV’s greatest asset is they offer greater regulation of different pressure applications, especially condensing pressure.
A basic refrigeration cycle consists of four major elements, a compressor, a condenser, a metering device and an evaporator. The lowering of condensing pressure is a proven major energy saving measure. At lower condensing pressure, compressor energy use will be reduced.
EEV benefits:
- Superheat control (such as in supermarket’s display cases
- Liquid injection
- Condensing pressure regulation
- Evaporating or crankcase pressure regulation
- High pressure applications
- Stepper motor (SW) driven valves
- Lower condensing pressure
- Pulse width modulated (PWM) valves -opening and closing valve times
- Faster reaction in load change
- Better use of evaporator
- Universally fitting
- Wide range of operating pressures
- More efficient
- Energy saving.
EEV Energy Savings and simplicity
Total Climate Solutions can assure you that electronic expansion valves are stable and reliable. EEV’s in refrigeration systems allow for significant energy savings.
These savings are through the wide range of the valves operation at various differential pressures and the precision in terms of control. Their regulation of the refrigerant flow also reduces the risks of failures.
Additionally, installing just one expansion valve can make the refrigerant circuit much simpler. Without doubt the application and use of EEV technology ensures energy savings that translates into a very fast return on investment.
