Refrigeration operating efficiency
Ever wondered what goes into refrigeration maintenance and how it works? Refrigeration performance assessments help to identify any faults, or where improvements can be made to your refrigeration system. A maintenance strategy and solution can then be implemented to improve the efficiency of the refrigeration unit.
Energy efficiency improvements, modifications and additions are made to a refrigeration system in order to improve the overall systems coefficient of performance (COP).
The COP is essentially a measure of the entire refrigeration systems operating efficiency. It is the ratio of heat extraction to energy input. For example the ratio of heating or cooling provided vs. the electrical energy required to run the refrigeration system.
The refrigeration heat pump (the refrigerant cycle)
In refrigeration the “heat pump” being referred to, is actually the complete refrigerant cycle also known as the vapor compression cycle, or the thermodynamic cycle which the refrigerant cycles through. The main components of this cycle are:
The Compressor
The main component of the whole refrigeration system. It circulates the refrigerant through two heat exchangers, (the condenser and evaporator). The refrigerant is changed from a liquid to a vapour via a metering device.
The Condenser
Removes the heat in the refrigerant vapor and condenses it from a vapor to a liquid
The Expansion Valve or Metering device
This device regulates the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. It also changes the liquid refrigerant to a vapor mixture
The Evaporator
Absorbs the heat from the air and within the refrigerated space. As the refrigerant turns back into vapor, it cycles back to the compressor, starting the whole process over again.
Refrigeration Energy Efficiency Ratio
A trained refrigeration mechanic can let you know how efficient your system is operating. The EER is a formula that is calculated by multiplying the COP with a set number of units of energy (BTU).
Household white goods, fridges and cooling systems are good examples of the EER formula. The appliances are rated by their energy efficiency by awarding the highest and most efficient appliances with up to 10 stars.
